Module 3 – Rhyme of History

Humanity advances technology on many areas.  One area that governments spend a great deal of resources developing is their military might. Technology lends itself to this effort.  A current technology of war is the drone.  These unmanned aircraft allow governments to attack targets from a distance with limited human exposure (Drones, 2012).

This technology, attacking from afar, is a rhyme of the catapult (Laureate Education, 2014).  Catapults were designed to attack an enemy strong hold from a distance by flinging an object at that enemy (Catapult History, n.d).  Drones are capable of sustained self-flight and firing projectiles and explosives of their own much like the ammunition one could load into a catapult.

  1. Kayle,
I did not even think of the catapult when I was looking at drones. Thanks for pointing that out. I spend so much time dealing with drones with videocameras that I forget they can be useful for so many other things, and military use is certainly one of them.

  2. Hi Kayle,

It is not easy finding examples of technology that demonstrate a rhyme of history. Your example of war drones being a rhyme of history of catapults was genius. As you mentioned, both allow attacks from a distance, but drones have the potential to cause more damage than catapults could. Wish there wasn’t such a thing as war.

  3. Hi Kayle,
I really like your rhyme, great stuff!
Like many items first developed for military use, GPS and the Hummer being two of my favorites, drone technology is going to benefit everyday people. A company has designed and is testing a prototype of a ‘drone ambulance’ that could carry a patient on a stretcher and one EMT. The vehicle has four rotors that allow the ambulance to land and takeoff like a helicopter but will then rotate to fly like a plane. This would make it possible for the EMT to get into a crash scene without the need to get through traffic, fly into a mass-casualty event quicker than a ground based rescue unit, and could transport directly to any hospital with a helipad. Please check out the idea here: http://www.argodesign.com/work/drone-ambulance-argodesign.html.
